“Ignore it and die,” says LKM proprietor Gary Eastwood when asked about the recycling industry’s attitude to the environment.

He designed LKM’s Sittingbourne site to minimise impact upon the environment and is aware that this approach is not only a legal requirement, but also the way forward for the recycling industry.

In particular, he foresaw the tightening of regulations on the scrapping and disposal of vehicles (ELV) and doubled LKM’s site in order to develop the necessary processing abilities and capacity to satisfy new EU legislation and the new demands placed upon car manufacturers.

Gary’s view is:.

"Countries like Germany and Holland have been way ahead of the UK in recycling and proving that this is where the future lies, for both scrap and recycling businesses and their suppliers and customers.

EU and Government legislation will offer new opportunities such as ELV, with expansion for those who make the most of this new trend, but a bleak future for those who ignore it.

We can satisfy the desire of suppliers and customers to be ‘greener’ in the future and will continue to invest heavily in the best equipment and measures to achieve that.

In addition to acreage and plant necessary to meet new and more stringent recycling demands, LKM has also further tightened its management procedures.

It is currently one of the few organisations within its field to have gained demanding ISO 9001 quality management status."
